Self-Myofascial Release is a type of movement therapy. A way to manage your pain and tension at home on your own or between massage appointments. I will teach you techniques which you will carry out in our 1:1 session and can also practice alone at home.
What is Fascia?
Fascia is the thin, fibrous connective tissue that wraps around and supports every structure in your body. (Organs, bones, muscles, nerve fibres and blood vessels). The tissue does more than provide internal structure; fascia has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin. When stressed, it tightens up.
Research has proven that fascia, like muscle, has the ability to contract and relax and plays a major role in mobility and stability of joints. Fascial restrictions do not show up on MRI, CAT scans or X-Rays and therefore can often be the cause of unexplained pain. Fascia is completely continuous throughout the body, therefore the original site of injury (physical or emotional) can cause issues to creep through the entire fascial system. (i.e the place where you feel the pain may not be the root cause of the issue.)
When our bodies are subjected to poor posture our fascia is consistently overloaded from supporting the bodies positioning. This causes fascia to deform by binding down and densifying, which will cause an abnormal pull, worsening the original postural imbalance. Therefore Myofascial release can be extremely useful for dealing with postural issues relating from office work.
Self-Myofascial Release (SMFR)
I am qualified to teach you various techniques, using tools such as a ball, foam roll or peanut to help release these restrictions in the fascia. This if practiced regularly can help with managing pain, postural alignment and movement in the body.
Techniques are designed to gently and slowly elongate and relax the fascia, by working on both the body, mind and breath. Some techniques may be painful at first, but this is a useful pain that you are completely in control of. As soon as it becomes too much you just just back off out of it.
Your appointment will start with a consultation and a postural assessment so that I can structure the session around your specific needs. I will talk you through and demonstrate the techniques during your session and send you away with some self care homework to work on before our next appointment.

Client Testimonial
“After my first SMFR taster session this is definitely something I would like to take further. There was a visible difference in my rounded tight shoulder directly after and my shoulders felt more aligned. My posture was noticeably better when standing”
